Mom! Stop playing with that kitty and smiling at that kitty and start smiling at me! said the teary eyed little boy last night. Ive known he was processing some jealousy of Cheddar the kitten for a few days now. Were two weeks into this kitty, and hes had a few trips to the vet for a stomach bug, medicine, regular feedings and cleanings and playings. And Js received the regular little boy admonitions to be careful, be gentle, dont spin around with the kitty, dont drop the kitty, the kitty doesnt want to play right now. Transitions are hard, even when theyre as seemingly simple as getting a kitten for your 4 year old boy. I was glad that J finally said out loud what hes been feeling. It seemed a sign of his emotional maturity and readiness to care for an animal. Speaking your feelings can be hard. And usually, freeing. This morning was filled with kitten love, smiles and laughter, and not one spin or drop. -Koa
