Mom Tip: Look Up! Early autumn one of my favorite times of year. The mornings are cool, the breeze has a slight scent of burnt leaves, and my inner “bird nerd” rejoices as hundreds of feathered migratory friends pass through town on their way to the tropics. My kids make fun of the fact that Mommy is the funny lady with the binoculars and bird book in hand at the playground, but they also love looking out the window at the cardinal, or gold finch who stopped by to feed. My motherly pride almost burst through the seams of my warbler-loving heart the other day when my 4-year-old pointed to my homemade bird feeder and said, “Mom, that nuthatch sure is cute.” The beauty of bird watching isn’t the just in the birds, but the in the act of observance. Slowing down to really take notice of something teaches them to slow down and take notice of the world and its fine, beautiful details. So my tip for this week is to put out a little bird seed and teach your kids the joy of observing the fun details this season has to offer!
