Mom memory #8 When I was about 13, I remember sitting in our dining room with two of my moms friends and soccer teammates. The two women were a couple. One of them worked for local TV station, reporting the news. Because she feared losing her job (among other reasons), the couple was not out in many settings. When the women left our house, my mom sat me down and told me not to mention the fact that they were a couple to ANYONE unless they gave me permission to do so. She explained that one woman could lose her job, and that not everyone supported them being a couple. She told me over and over that day, you do not automatically have permission to share other peoples stories. Each person gets to decide how to tell his/her story. I didnt fully understand what she was saying at the time, but I understood how serious she was. And I have carried her words with me.
