Conley, District Superintendent Phone: (304) 366-6811 E-mail: [email protected] Fax: (304) 333-0224 March 26, 2014 Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I encourage your support of the 2014 Celebration of Mission Event on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Middletown Mall in Fairmont. This event will be accepting goods for three conference mission projects (listed below) and other mission projects in the West Virginia Annual Conference. Monetary gifts will be shared with all mission projects, unless they are designated. You may make your checks out to “WV Conference Treasurer.” I urge Sunday School classes, youth groups, UM Men, UM Women, churches, charges, parishes, and businesses to organize fund raisers to support the United Methodist mission projects in West Virginia. Information on these mission projects and their needs list can be found on page 6. United Methodist Coalfields Ministries #878 Volunteers in Mission #892 Upshur Parish House –Buckhannon #889 Jesus said, “As you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40) I hope that churches, individuals, and businesses will be willing to make a difference in the lives of those in need. Walk-A-Mile for mission events in several parishes has been huge successes in the past and can be again. Please be creative in your supply and fund raising. Get your whole church involved. Thanks to Ginny Davidson, Barbara Metcalfe and Janice Watts, the Co-Chairs of the 2014 MonValley Celebration of Mission Event, the committee, and all others who will be helping this year. The Celebration of Mission Event needs every pastor and church in the MonValley District to help make it a success. Join me as we pray for the 2014 Celebration of Mission Event and the many volunteers who give their time and energy for others in this important ministry. In advance, we are grateful for your support as we reach out in the name of Jesus Christ to those in need. Grace & freedom, Ellis E Conley To Belong To God - To Be Filled By God – To Serve God Mon Valley District, The United Methodist Church Celebration of Mission Event Date: May 10, 2014 Location: Middletown Mall, Fairmont, West Virginia Time: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Set up for the event will be on Friday 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm and on Saturday beginning at 8:00 am. Churches may begin bringing donations (mission supplies, baked goods, etc.) beginning at 8:30 am. What is the Mon Valley District Celebration of Mission Event? The Celebration of Mission Event (COME) is a WV Conference-wide activity culminating the year’s fund-raising efforts for United Methodist Missions. This year, the conference will hold nine district events throughout the state. Our goal for the 2014 Mon Valley District Celebration of Mission Event site is to raise $20,500. Last year we raised $23,807.97 and donated over 900 items to the missions. There will be a Kids Karnival, White Elephant Sale, Bake Sale, Craft Sale, Entertainment, Praise Bands, Food Concession, Silent Auction, Flower Sale, Live Auction and Missions Education. We need your help to make this year’s event a huge success. Suggestions to Motivate Your Church to Support the Celebration of Mission Event: • Prepare a sign-up sheet listing the missions “wish list” items and ask members to sign up to bring individual items on the lists. • Collect items for the Live Auction and Silent Auction from Community Businesses, Direct Sellers (like Avon, Pampered Chef, Longaberger, Mary Kay, Tupperware, and Home Interior), church members, family members, and friends. • Invite children from your community to come to the Mall on May 10 and enjoy the Kid’s Karnival. We have planned many activities for the young ones ~ a great Family Outing! • Donate items for the White Elephant Sale. Look in your attic or basement storage area for treasures. Have you finished with any good books? • Offer to pick up someone from your church or community who doesn’t get out much and bring him or her with you. What a blessing! • Encourage prayer for the Celebration of Mission Event through your minister, during church meetings, and in individual meditation. God will guide us if we only call upon Him. Activities Planned: Bake Sale: Betty Marks, Chair Bailey Memorial UMC, Taylor County 304-842-8666 Bake sale items should be individually wrapped and priced. Baked goods that sold well last year include sugar-free items, various kinds of breads (like salt-rising, whole wheat, and nut breads), peanut butter and chocolate fudge, pepperoni rolls, pies, and rolls. We need lots of rhubarb. If you or a neighbor raises rhubarb, please donate some. Cupcakes are hard to sell. Small bags of party mix go well. There are some great recipes out there. Last year’s proceeds were $616.20. Craft Sale: David and Ethelyn VanGilder, Co-Chair Janes Memorial UMC, Fairmont 304-534-3441 Craft items should be priced. We need many different types of crafts. Some items that sell well are woodworking, needlework, yarn arts, jewelry making, painting, quilting, and birdhouses. Last year, we realized $914.00 for this event. Please call David or Ethelyn if you have any questions. Food Concession: Diane Sypolt, Chair Gateway UMC, Fairmont 304-641-7273 In 2013, the food proceeds were $1208.88. Missions Education: Sandy Burnside, Chair Eldora UM Church, Fairmont 304-592-9070 Sandy will coordinate the displays from the three missions we have been assigned by the Conference. Let’s fill boxes for our three missions! Vans will be at the event to transport items to the missions. Silent Auction: Georgia Meyers, Chair Mt Vernon UMC 304-864-5094 Each church is asked to donate a theme basket for the Silent Auction. Ideas for the theme baskets are kitchen, baby, tools, school supplies, craft supplies, kid’s art supplies, cosmetics, family night (board games & snacks), sports, and movie night. Baskets may be wicker, laundry, Rubbermaid bins, wheelbarrows, and wagons ~ use your imagination. Please shrink-wrap and decorate your basket. You should include your church’s name as “Donated by” and a list of items in the basket. Your church could collect money from members and have one person arrange the basket or have members bring individual items in and assemble the basket as a group project ~ this is a great Sunday School project. If your church would like to make more than one basket, remember the money raised will go directly to United Methodist Missions. Last year we made $2880.00. We will have a minimum bid of $25 for each basket for 2014. White Elephant Sale: Caryol Longenecker, Chair Wesley UMC, Morgantown 304-376-1556 White Elephant Sale donations should be clean and priced for sale. This is a good time to clean out your attic, basement, and garage. Last year’s proceeds were $381.60. Kid’s Karnival: Melanie Thomas, Chair Boothsville UMC 304-592-3840 The Kids Karnival will be filled with many fun events. Here are a few things the Kid’s Karnival will have this year: Fish Pond Bowling Bean Bag Toss Cake Walks Ring Toss over Pop Face Painting Last year the Kids Karnival made $800.00. Live Auction: Patti Connor, Chair Eldora UMC 304-366-0338 Items that sell well are quilts, baby quilts, afghans, antiques, small appliances, nice glass wear, and collectibles. Inexpensive items donated for the Auction will be placed in the White Elephant Sale. If you would like to place a Reserve Bid on an item, please let Patti know when you drop off the item. Items need to be delivered to the Mall by 8:30 am. The auction will be held beginning at 12:00 noon. Come, buy your lunch and enjoy the Live Auction.
