Monastery of Agia Triada of Tzagkarolon (Holy Trinity) // Chania region,Crete // Greece. Located in Cape Meleha in Cydonia, located 16,5 km from Chania town, at the foot of the mountain top of Tzompomylos, the monastery lies at a landscape full of olive groves, vineyards and cypresses. Arriving at the convent, the visitor immediately understands why architecture is one of the greatest examples of the Cretan Renaissance. The monastery was built by the Venetian nobles Jeremiah and Laurentius Tzagarolos. Jeremiah was a well known scholar of the time with important education and a close friend of the Patriarch of Alexandria Meletios Pegas. Jeremiah himself was a candidate for Patriarch as well. Also, Jeremiah had designed and built the complex of the monastery, influenced by the architect Sebastiano Serlio from Verona, Italy. In 1637 Jeremiah died and Laurence continued the constuction. The monastery made progress and soon it gained huge rural property donations, however mainly from purchases. In the revolution of 1821 the Turks burnt down the monastery and it remained deserted for a few years, during when its filed documents were lost. But then, in 1830, after the permission of the Turkish authorities, the monastery was renovated. In 1892 the Hieratic Seminar was also established to educate famous priests and teachers, which later, in 1930, evolved into the Hieratic Faculty. The complex, which is of a fortified formula, forms a large quadrangle with a stunning catholic in the center and two small chapels, as it is customary in Orthodox monasteries. The strict symmetry and the use of forms of classical antiquity are the main elements that characterize it. The ground floor rooms are accessible from the exterior with three arched entrances, arranged symmetrically at the edges and the center of the west wing. Its small museum exposes the few relics that have survived the constant historical vicissitudes. It consists of mostly images, vestments, sacred vessels, a few manuscripts, early printed books and official documents. The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is perhaps the most impressive monastic complex of the late Venetian Crete, both due to its size and architectural form. It combines elements of the Orthodox monastic practice with Western architectural styles and thus expressed the spirit of convergence between the two doctrines in the area of Crete. Today the monastery is operated by seven monks, who ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the well preserved complex.
