Monday 17 June 2013 2 Cor 6:1-10; Ps 98; Mt 5:38-42 THEME: To forgive or not to forgive … is the question Jesus said to the people, 38 “You have heard that it was said: An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.39 But I tell you this: do not oppose evil with evil; if someone slaps you on your right cheek, turn and offer the other40 … Give when asked, and do not turn your back on anyone who wants to borrow from you.” One day, a boy stole some of his family’s gold jewellery. This crime haunted him so much that he confessed to his father, expecting the old man to be angry and violent. Instead, Mahatma Ghandi’s father wept ... As Ghandi later wrote, “Those pearly drops of love cleansed my heart.” In fact, they released Ghandi into the psychological power of pardon and pacifism, which is exactly what today’s Gospel tells us. Many quotes are attributed to Ghandi, who, it should be reminded, was a Hindu. A notable one is that “the weak can never forgive, as forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” There is, however, a very striking quote. It is reproduced below without commentary, since nothing can be added to it: “I like your Christ; (but) I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
