Monday, 26th January 2015 OUR DAILY BREAD” Topic: Abide in Him (Repeated) John 15: 1-8 (With Commentary) 1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. >This passage give the secrets to fruitfulness in the christian life.< Abide in me (1), I in you (2). The first secret is to abide in christ, that is, to surrender to him as our Lord, to surrender our ALL to him, just like a tree surrenders to the ground. Abiding in Him requires that we “fall down and die”. Christ said in John 12: 24 “Verily, Verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die [die to self, die to sin, die to the passions of life], it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit” Abiding in Him also involves following Him, that is, following His example (John 12: 26), it also entails learning more about Him (Matthew 11:28-30). Abiding in Him requires that we walk as He walked, 1 John 2:6 says, He that saith he abideth in him ought himself [ voluntarily, not requiring to be forced] also so to walk, even as he walked. The second secret, is to let the “I” of Christ, that is, the Word of God, (John 1:1) abide in us (cf. verse 4 and verse 7). This is not just about hearing or merely reading the Word. It requires that the Word abides, remains, lasts, continues to dwell in us. There is need to constantly ensure that we have not forgotten the message of the Word. Several things prevent the Word of God from abiding in the heart. Mark 4, gives us a few of them: Stones in the heart (refusal to accept the totality of the word), which do not let the word of God penetrate the heart (Mark 4:16, 17). When there are stones in the soil, the seed may enter, but can not germinate in some areas and so would not take proper root. Thorns in the heart, that choke the word (Mark 4: 18:19). These refer to the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches and the lust of other things. When worry and anxiety because of “what we shall eat, what we shall wear, where we shall live…” enter into the heart. They prevent fruitfulness. So we have to really pray that God will take away the stones and the thorns in the heart so that the word can be fruitful. Confession: I’ll abide in Christ, His Word will abide in me.
