Monday, August 25th of some year in a previous century was my first day at Texas A&M. My primary task for the day was to go over to the building that I could see across the grass out the window in my office, enter the building, turn right, go through the doors and tell them who you are. They then gave me a stack of papers to fill out that would make me an official employee of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station and authorize them to retain approximately a third of my pay check for things like taxes, insurance and retitement. Later in the day, I was introduced to the location of the mainframe computer, keypunch machines and card reader that would occupy a good portion of my next few years.
