Monday Devotion: Read Jude 1-4. Jude was most likely the half-brother of Jesus and the full brother of James, the leader of the Jerusalem church. His purpose in writing was to forcefully condemn the false teachers who had infiltrated the church. To that end, Jude’s message maintains great relevance for us today. The nature of the false teaching is unclear other than that it denied Jesus as the Christ. Thousands of years later, false teaching still remains one of the greatest threats to the church. While other external threats may appear more threatening, a subversive, internal assault on truth can be particularly destructive, especially when it blemishes the true person and purpose of the Savior. Jesus himself warned about such threats in Matthew 7:15-20. So, considering the grave nature of the threat, we too, should be compelled as Jude was to embrace the truth about Jesus and defend it as needed. We, the church, are called to this purpose. Let’s do our part by living in the truth of God’s Word and letting our lives be a testimony of the true nature of Christ our Lord. From there, the Holy Spirit can equip us and shape us to become stout defenders of the faith, like Jude.
