Monday It Will Be Labor Day but the Parade - TopicsExpress

Monday It Will Be Labor Day but the Parade Sadly............ Monday it will be Labor Day but sadly it wont look like this. Barberton had a Labor Day Parade almost from the beginning. O. C. Barber used to be in the Labor Day Parade and gave the key note speech at Lake Anna. However the Labor Day Parades I remember were in the 1950s through the 1970s and they were gala affairs. First of all the Parade kicked off at 10:00 am and to get a curb side seat, so you could get some prime candy, you had to be on the curb on Tuscarawas at 8:00 am. By the time the parade kicked off, and they were LONG parades to, there were people standing 10 deep on the sidewalks pushing you out into the streets. I am not even sure how they drove the floats down the streets with so many people crowding in on them. After the Parade was over it was to the Masonic Temple for pancakes and a chance to meet the guest of honor of the parade, usually a big time politician. In a state hotly contested even then, the big wigs from Washington D.C. and Columbus would make sure the Dems were well represented. The GOP, not so much. After the Parade and the pancakes I would skip the political speeches and head for Campfield Hickmans parking lot where there were carnival rides setup for one day only. However, you remember Labor Day in Barberton. Probably better than I do. Tell us about it and tell us about your memories.
