Monday, January 11: Dane loves to sing. He has always sung along in the car, in the shower, anywhere really. He is totally unaffected as to what is going on around him, who is listening, how he sounds, how loud he is…. Before the accident, Dane sang in church, participated in the church’s children’s choir. Music has always been such an important part of our family’s life and when Dane was injured, it was music that soothed our aching hearts and calmed a child in a neurologic storm. We played music in his room constantly. We sang to him, over him, around him. I can remember so many moments in this journey that music has been a part of. When my precious child lay in the PICU in Oklahoma City, two dear friends came at different times and just sang over him. I will never forget Dea Newsom, kneeling by my child sweetly singing, my sweet friend, Shelly Cantwell, appearing in the waiting room and ministering to my baby in such a profound way through song. I treasure the memories of countless nights watching my husband sing over Dane (he has an amazing voice) for hours. I remember our aide, Bintu, at Dallas Childrens Hospital, who quietly sang to Dane throughout her whole shift sitting next to my baby. I will never forget. When Dane was not talking and we were so desperate to hear his voice, Diran would sing a song called “Cows Around” that they had always sung together. The night before he spoke, he would move his lips as if to try to form the words, but there were no words. This Sunday at church, we sang one of the songs that Diran would sing to Dane. It was such a rush of emotion, such a precious memory. Dane is next to me, singing – loud and clear. Today in the car, he plugs his phone into the car stereo system and commences to sing and play the air guitar all the way from Decatur to Denton. I sang along with him and we had a great time. Some of the song were praise and worship and some were Johnny Cash and George Strait. But they were all precious to me. Scripture speaks a lot about music. Music is God’s creation. Music is worship, when it honors Him. Music is a tie to our past traditions and people. The words of music tell stories, give praise, draw us to the Lord. SO today as I listen to Dane sing, I am overwhelmed with the miracle of his life, that he can sing, that he remembers all the words, that God is glorified in the simplicity of a little boys song. Like Bintu told me that night “God inhabits the Praises of His people.” And so God be with us…… “Sing for joy to God our strength; Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob. Raise a song, strike the timbrel, The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.” Psalms 81:1-2 “Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving, Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.” Psalms 95:2 So sing your song, God is glorified…….Sunday’s coming…………..
