Monday, July 21, 2014 - #Freedom #Free #Liberty #Slave #Slavery #CivilWar Child of the Free Galatians 4: 30, 31 Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free. Margaret Garner was a slave in pre-Civil War America notorious for killing her two year old daughter with a butcher knife, rather than see the child returned to slavery. Margaret was not tried for murder, but was forced to return to a slave state along with her youngest child, and a daughter aged about nine months. The Liberator reported on March 11, 1856 that the steamboat Lewis, on which the Garners were traveling, began to sink and that Margaret and her baby daughter were thrown overboard when another boat coming to their rescue hit the Lewis. Sadly, the baby was drowned. It was reported that Margaret was happy that her baby had died and that she would try to drown herself. Margaret Garner did not like being a woman of bondage; a slave. She understood that they were great advantages to being free and would have much rather her children were dead than to experience a life of slavery as she did. Could you image what it would be like to be born into slavery or bondage? You cannot? Sadly, the non-believer cannot imagine it either but they live the life every day. Jesus explained to Nicodemus in John 3:6, 7, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.” What Jesus shared is that to be a child of the free you must give your life to God that he will bring forth a new life in you through His Spirit. And as Margaret Garner new killing her child would provide them freedom from slavery, the dying of the old nature provides birth of a new nature to be free.
