Monday, June 15, 1863 --- I went up the hill last night to see the shells fly through the air. Our men on this side of the city sent up signal rockets to show those on the river how to direct the shells so as to fall on the enemy’s mortar. We had a howitzer on a hill that was used as a mortar for throwing shells there also. It was curious to see shells coming form east and west, and all dropping into the same ravine where the enemy’s mortar was planted. We have had no message from that piece of ordinance to-day. I guess that our shells have silenced it; for three or four guns fired at the same place most of the night. We have heard that there was another battle on Big Black River yesterday, and our men took four hundred prisoners. Probably, Johnson will think that the road to Vicksburg, like proverbial “Jordan” is hard to travel. Sgt. Edmund Newsome Co. B 81st IL Inf. Newsome will not comment in his diary for five days.
