Monday, March 10 2014 1 Kings 19:1-8 Stillness After Elijah’s stressful confrontation with Ahab and Jezebel, he ran himself into a state of exhaustion. God sent an angel to care for him. When he came to Horeb, the mountain of God, during a time of stillness, “the word of the Lord came to him.” Stillness is something in which I have come to place great value. After all, David’s admonition to us is not “Be busy, and know that I am God.” No, it is, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). As a result of his time of stillness before God, Elijah heard God in “a still small voice.” Stillness is an indispensable tool. I wonder what our churches would be like if we practiced more stillness for our mission, preaching, teaching, worship, service, and fellowship. I wonder about our untapped potential as churches because we have not engaged stillness. There are few things more dynamic than a restive soul. Prayer: Lord, I come to you as an empty pitcher before a full fountain. Fill me with your love, your grace, your acceptance, your embrace. I hear your word coming to me, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Let me rest right there. Rev. Thomas Dean First United Church of Christ, Bremen
