Monday Marvels Crossdeck Pendant An arresting cable was actually called a crossdeck pendant and was 1 7/6 inches thick, 100 feet long and made of hemp and wire. It had a breaking strength of 180,000 pounds. It was good for a maximum of 80 arrested landings and then would have to be replaced after that. The crossdeck pendant was kept three inches above the Flight Deck by a series of springs. They were attached to the purchase cable which then passed through the deck on both edges. Each airplane had a retractable hook attached to the bottom of the planes frame and when the pilot was ready to land, he drops the tailhook, which extends about 18 inches below the plane.
