Monday May 5th open 9 am to 7 pm. We have very nice pre-picked berries again but the u-pick fields are still in need of ripening time. We will have one field completely closed tomorrow. It should have some nice ripe berries on Tuesday. This is a good time to remind our customers that we do not normally shut down to allow the fields to ripen. We tried that a few years ago and upset too many people. Therefore, it is up to you, the u-pick customer, to pick whatever level of ripeness you desire. While we dont encourage people to sample in the field (berries should be rinsed first and every berry eaten in the field is a loss to our income...this is not a hobby for us, it is our livelihood), we dont mind you eating a couple. This should calibrate your picking standard. If you are picking to the color you see in the grocery store, then you are picking underripe berries and they will not be sweet. The Chandler berries should be picked primary red all over. The Camarosa berries should be picked dark red to almost maroon all over. Camarosas in particular will taste like grocery store berries unless they are picked at least dark red all over. Ask us where these varieties are planted before picking. Thanks for reading another long one!
