Monday Motivation (A new weekly section where I will share some thoughts on leadership) Week 1: STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES A turning point for me was a few years ago when I was asked to write my Opposite Job Description - a list of all the jobs I dont want to do, or know Im not good at. I was then told that what I had written was someone elses Real Job Description - a list of the jobs they do want to do, and are good at - so find that person to do it! By doing so I had, in effect, written down all my weaknesses - something we arent encouraged to do very often. Being able to state your weaknesses is a really important tool for success. No one is good at everything, and as soon as you can recognise and accept what yours are, you can ensure you have other people around you to fill those gaps, leaving you to focus on your strengths. In personal and professional development sessions, it is quite common for people to identify one of their weaknesses and aim to improve it. But it is probably a weakness for a reason - and never something you will end up working in or enjoying (some examples for me are areas like maths/finances, and science). I learnt it is better to work on improving your existing strengths. The Good to Great philosophy is a perfect example of this and one we do in my team at work - choose something you are already good at, and develop it until you become even more skilled at it (some examples for me are doing speeches/presentations, and developing people). This is a good contrast to if you developed a weakness which may end up being good and on a par with your peers, but by developing a strength from good to great, you will end up standing above and beyond your peers. Have a go at stating your weaknesses and accepting them, and alongside that chose a strength that you want to further develop. All the best for a fantastic first week of your school holidays team, and enjoy your nights off!!! Im enjoying a home-cooked meal for the first time in a while! :-)
