Monday Mystery: Born in South Carolina, my family moved to the Republic of Texas when I was four years old. During the Civil War, I enlisted in Terry’s Texas Rangers; within a month I was appointed Adjutant of the Fifteenth Texas Infantry; at War’s end I had achieved the rank of Major. After the War, I spent time in Mexico and Brazil looking to establish a settlement for former Confederates. After returning to Texas, I was elected to the state legislature but was denied my seat.
