Monday Mystery: My wife and I made annual trips to Europe and we began collecting art. Between1911 and 1919, three of my brothers died thereby leaving our entertainment operation to my brother Charles and me. During the height of the Ranger, TX, oil boom, I financed a railroad that was chartered to lay track from May in Brown County to Newcastle in Young County; railroad offices were in Eastland, TX. In the 1920s, I invested in and developed land on the Sarasota Keys hoping to create a winter resort. My brother Charles died in 1926 and a year later I moved the entertainment headquarters from Connecticut to Sarasota. In 1929, I purchased the American Circus Corp. for $1.7 million; this meant I owned every traveling circus in America. My reign as “King of the American Circus” was short-lived due to declining health, the stock market crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. I died of pneumonia in 1936. Who was I?
