Monday October 6th - A really long procedure By Carol Buzalsky — 21 minutes ago Mom has been on a 24 hour EEG monitor since about 9 pm last night. The EEG has shown seizure activity. The seizures are sometimes noticeable with tremor like movement on one side of her body in her hand, leg and shoulder. They are treating her with an anti-seizure medication Keppra as well as Ativan which is a short term anti-seizure anxiety medication. Hopefully at about 9 tonight they can remove the 30 electrodes from her head. DeAnn said most of the time the seizures occur mom doesnt even notice and will keep talking and or sleeping as if they are not happening. The thought is the seizures are caused by another hemorrhage in her occipital area of her brain that appears to be about 2 weeks old. The hope again is that it is sometime mom can with therapy recover from. Moms moments of confusion have continued through today. Sometimes she is lucid and others not. Part of it depends on when the ativan has been given. She also hasnt had quality sleep for the past few days so we are hoping she gets a good nights rest. Moms liver has been a concern the past few days as her lab tests continue to increase in the abnormal range. An ultrasound of the liver didnt show anything significant. An MRI of the liver will be done sometime tomorrow. Infectious Disease saw mom late today and they are wondering if the liver issues are due to one of the antibiotics mom has been on since April. The plan was to continue the antibiotics until mid December. The rifampin is going to be stopped now for a few days to see what changes occur in her liver labs. It is difficult to put into words what mom has and still is going through in addition to how weak she is. She has gone almost 2 weeks without tube feedings and has been getting vital needs through her IV for things like fluids and glucose. Finally late this afternoon the ok was given to start tube feedings through her newly placed G (stomach)/J (intestine) feeding site. We sure hope this helps mom perk up a little bit. She has complained the past two weeks how heavy the nurse call/tv volume control remote is. She has a very hard time with the strength in her hands to press the nurse button. The good news is they do have what they call soft touch nurse call buttons which mom has used at different times the past few months of her hospitalization. Soft touch is very true as just picking it up to move it to a different spot causes the nurse call light to go on! Mom hasnt needed to use the nurse call button much as she getting one on one nursing care so a nurse is always in the room with her, even though she isnt in a ICU unit. I believe this started last night and will continue through the night. I am sure this will be evaluated on a daily basis, but it is comforting for our family to know that someone is in the room with her, especially at night. I think I managed to recall the various texts and phone calls I had from DeAnn today! The plan a few days ago was to transfer mom to Fargo tomorrow (Tuesday) but the transfer has been delayed. We are unsure when she will come back to Fargo as we are taking things day by day. We hope it is soon so she is closer to family again and mom has also been asking to get back to Fargo.
