Monday Reading: Deuteronomy 8:1-5 Key Verse: Deuteronomy 8:4 Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years. Devotion: When God took the children of Israel through the desert there were many new things which happened to them. He guided them in a very new way, one which would have probably worried many of them in the beginning. He looked after them by giving them food and water at the right times; that food which He gave them was entirely new and unknown. He made sure that even though they travelled for so long, nothing of theirs wore out during the journey. God was not just showing them that they could and should depend on God for everything, but showing them that no matter what they had to face, good or bad, known or unknown, they could trust God for a good outcome, a blessing and discipline as well. It was not all a bed of roses out there because they did face hard times, they faced discipline and they faced the good and the bad. But when they looked back on what happened, they would always be able to recognise the blessing that came with every circumstance. I know that I ache after a long walk, not just because I am getting old, but because it may well be hard work that I have been through. As we face tests of endurance we come up against things which remind us of those tests, be it blisters or aches and pains. These people walked a great distance and yet everything that they started out with lasted the whole journey. Now either they were the best cobblers in the known world, or God really did look out for everything for them! We need to take a good long look at what God has done for them over the years and apply that same love and care to our lives as well. I’m not saying that through our love and care for others we will be able to make shoes last for decades, but when we care for others as Christ has taught us, we can help them to get through the tough times just as we can with their help and support. Love and care builds community! Points to Ponder: How much do you look out for others? Do you see how much God has done for you yet?
