Monday September 15 (Day 215) By Mel & Lou Flaherty — Sep 15, 2014 6:41am steady as she goes. Physical therapy is still focused on standing straight and getting some endurance. She stands up six to eight times per session, for about a minute. Lately it takes three of us to assist. One to do the primary support of her body to help her get up and stay steady. The second therapist is a backup, in case she lists over a lot or suddenly has her knees buckle. The third person (me) acts as a knee brace for the left knee. There is a lot of looseness in that knee and it tends to hyperextend too much if left to itself, so I hold her knee in the proper position. A orthotist came in the other day to fit her for ankle orthotics to address the knee issue. She wont see those for a while yet, while he makes custom devices from her molds. It was quite a process to assess her situation and make molds, but the biggest thing Mel took away from the experience is her determination to get a Portuguese Water Dog, like Shelby. Dave The Orthotist brings Shelby with him on his calls because she is a therapy dog, and of course mans best friend. Mel is sure of one thing. She wants whatever breed of dog that she saw last. I just need to make sure the last dog she sees before we actually get one is a dog we can live with. We had some good visits this weekend with crew friends and work friends. Ill attach a photo of Mel sporting her new Glastonbury Crew hat. It says life is better on the water. One more thing. some of you might be wondering if we were successful in the campaign to get more therapy for Mel (she has a 90 minute daily allowance, which is not enough). The facility administrator looked into the contract/billing situation and told me that they would increase her allowance starting today. Yay. Thats all I have. Thanks for reading. Thanks for caring. Lou
