Monday The drain failed, so in the morning we were told that the Nat would be operated on, either during the day or tomorrow. The consultant surgeon, when explaining everything, had told us that they would not operate at night as it may get complicated! Nat asked for an indication of how long it would take and after pressing was told the thought it may be 1-1.5 hours. Later in the morning we were told today now seems unlikely. At about 1.30-2 we were informed that it was on for today. The registrar anaesthetist was very good in checking out about Nats allergies and gave us confidence in him and his consultant. Nat was taken up to theatre and we left him going in at 4.30pm By 7 Mum and Nan are getting jumpy, by 8, well you can imagine. at 8.30 we are told Na is ready for collection, Mum shoots off with a nurse to get him and returns, half smiling, with an awake Nat. A few minutes later the surgical registrar arrives with the debrief. The operation took 2 hours and 2 hours was spent in recovery (no one had indicated that recovery would be that long!) When the surgeons took a look apparently they were faced with a mass that was about half the size of his stomach, so they used the traditional approach, leaving a nice scar in the centre of his stomach below his tummy button, they simply decided to clear the whole mess out, without investigating properly the cause. It took much longer than they expected but they cleared out everything and put in two drains to monitor things and then stitched him up. Nat is fine, is tired and sore, and with the morphine may be spending time mentally elsewhere. He will be in hospital for a good few days. Was it a burst appendix? well no quite knows because no one checked!!
