Monday afternoon I attended an event “Philanthropy 101”. This event really made me think about my life and the impact I have on others. Not only the impact I have already made, (we all make impacts on others, good or bad, whether we realize it or not), but also the huge opportunity college is to expand the impact you have on your peers, community, and world. In the spring of 2007, Paul Salmon, a fellow brother of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, lost his battle with leukemia. Paul had such a huge impact on the brothers and the community that they started an event to commemorate his life. What started as a small event, Battle of the Buffalo is now a huge annual event in the city of Huntsville that has raised over $80,000 for the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation. Without going into TOO much detail on this event at this moment, (that will come later), this planted a seed that got me thinking. If I were to leave this world, what impact would I have made? Is the impact as big as I would like it to be? What would people remember me most by? Would people even remember my accomplishments at all? What IS the impact I even want to make? HOW big do I want to make it? WHAT do I even want to accomplish? Sunday night I received a bid to the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity chapter here at UAH. With all these questions lingering in my head, I wanted to take a few days and really self-reflect on my own personal answers. With much thought, tonight I accepted the bid to become an ATO pledge. This fraternity, and what it stands for in the community, seemed to best embody my own personal answers to these questions. That being said, I would like to stress how unique Greek life is at UAH. It is not like the college “norm”. Greek life at this university is AMAZING. Each organization strives to make an impact. I can honestly say, Greek life here is the main pathway for people who want to become leaders and impact the world around them. As I continue to search for the answers to these questions, I feel like ATO is best suited to help me find them. Each person has a unique fit for them in Greek life, but for me I feel like it is the best choice. Good luck to all the pledges of the different organizations, but for me I think I have found my fit. PLEDGE ATO! (P.S. Please continue to stay in touch with me wherever I am! I will reply when I have downtime, even though that is seldom now. Thanks for all the prayers! Keep them coming!)
