Monday morning I looked at a picture of earth taken by one of the rovers on the surface of Mars, a tiny blue dot high above the silhouetted mountains on the Martian horizon. Ive seen the ten thousand galaxies photographed by the Hubble telescope as it peered into what was thought to be a hole in the almost seamless blanket of stars visible to the naked eye, and a galaxy from the edge of space and time 13 billion light years away. Trillions of stars in billions upon billions of galaxies in a universe that is expanding at an ever accelerating rate. Monday evening I marveled at how vast and majestic the universe is, and how small and inconsequential our microscopic blue dot, almost invisible from our nearest planetary neighbor, appears to be in the grand scheme of things. And my last spoonful of Cherries Garcia ice-cream with real maple syrup tasted soooo good.
