Monday night/Tuesday morning: An impressive clipper system [one - TopicsExpress

Monday night/Tuesday morning: An impressive clipper system [one on steroids it would seem] is about to unleash a snow and cold outbreak unlike weve seen this winter. I am concerned that there could be widespread 6 totals across the area followed by a ground blizzard. Let me explain.... This clipper has moisture to work with as QPF values are fairly high as clipper systems go. When looking at snow fall maps the first thing you may notice is they are only depicting 3-6 of snow for the area. While this is true, they are also only at the standard 10:1 ratio. Our snow Mon/Tues could have as much as a 20-25:1 ratio. This tells the forecaster that those 3-6 dont really means 3-6 they mean something much more. There is growing confidence that at least 6 of snow could fall across portions of N. IL. That would depend on the exact track the low pressure system takes. Right now it is anticipated to travel from W. IA to E. IL, but any shift north or south will cause totals to become highly variable. As it stands the greatest accumulation should occur north of I-88, with significant accumulations north of I-80 as well. Models depict the cut off to be south of US 24 across the southern areas of my region. While not an exact forecast, our seasons most significant snowfall is upon us overnight Monday. I do expect Winter Storm Watches to be issued for the local areas at some point tomorrow.
