#MondayMorningIgnition - September 8, 2014 When one yells, the other should listen-because when two people yell, there is no communication, just noise and bad vibrations. - Jan Peerce Ever had an argument? Of course, we all have. Can you recall the outcome of a recent argument? How did you feel when the argument was over? Typically when you argue, tempers flare, both sides get defensive, and when its over both sides lose. Even if you are right, throughout the argument you likely will offend your counterpart to prove your point, which just makes the other person feel inferior and they will resent your triumph. Its okay to disagree. In fact, disagreement is a great way to stretch your horizons and gain valuable perspectives. The manner in how you handle the disagreement will make all the difference. #DaleCarnegie says A misunderstanding is never ended by an argument but by tact, diplomacy, conciliation and a sympathetic desire to see the other persons viewpoint. The next time you are faced with a disagreement try a few simple steps to see if you can prevent an argument. 1) Welcome the disagreement - it could prevent you from making future mistakes. 2) Distrust your first instincts - they may be your worst, not your best. 3) Control your temper - bad attitudes will lead to defensive walls. 4) Listen first - Let the other person finish; resist interrupting. 5) Be honest - look for areas to admit error and apologize for them. 6) Thank the other person for their view - if someone is willing to discuss a topic they are likely interested in similar things as you. If you are able to implement these steps when faced with a disagreement in the future, you will likely find yourself arguing less while building relationships of understanding, which are highly more favorable than building barriers of resentment! For as Dale Carnegie says A man convinced against his will; is of the same opinion still. Happy Monday! Make this a great week and stay excited about making a difference!!
