Moneyball (2011) - Brad Pitt plays Oakland Athletics General - TopicsExpress

Moneyball (2011) - Brad Pitt plays Oakland Athletics General Manager Billy Beane in this film about how he put together the 2002 Oakland As baseball team, one that rewrote the record books and changed the game of baseball. Nominated for best picture as well as best supporting actor (J.Hill) and lead actor (Pitt), this film really captures the essence of baseball. Brad really gives a fabulous performance in this piece - right off the bat with his superstitions, his poor man mentality to the game and the ghost of his past haunting his present. The battles he has with the manager (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) are a real treat; its really funny to watch Brad go on a cutting spree to force Manager Howe to play Hatteberg at first base, which Howe was intentionally not doing. The scenes with his daughter, though light, provide context to how crazy his strategy was, because in effect this job was how he was close to his daughter. The scenes with the scouts were a nice bit of baseball camaraderie and later in fighting; Brad truly embodies the character hes playing, and was well worth being nominated for only the 2nd time in his career for Best Actor. For sports fans and Brad Pitt fans, this is a defining film for both, a must own. Next up, the final film up for Pitt reviews : 2013s World War Z.
