Monroe County Hospital tops in patient satisfaction By Bo Bolton Journal Publisher Monroe County Hospital is ranked among the highest health-care facilities in southwest Alabama in patient satisfaction, according to a recent survey by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. “I am so proud of Monroe County Hospital,” Director of Quality Services and Risk Manager Anne Dykes said. “Our outcome scores for patient satisfaction and clinical quality measures rank with the top hospitals in the nation. “Our patients acknowledge the outstanding quality of care they receive at Monroe County Hospital, and we strive every day to continue to provide just that.” MCH ranked first in six categories and near the top in four others in the first 10 categories of the survey. The county-owned hospital ranked first in: • Patients who reported that their nurses “Always” communicated well, • Patients who reported that their doctors “Always” communicated well, • Patients who reported that they “Always” received help as soon as they wanted, • Patients who reported that their pain was Always” well controlled, • Patients who reported that their room and bathroom were “Always” clean, and • Patients who gave their hospital a rating of 9 or 10 on a scale from 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest). Hospitals included in the survey are Providence Hospital in Mobile, Mobile Infirmary, University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, Baptist Hospital in Pensacola and Jackson Hospital & Clinic in Montgomery. Community hospitals include Evergreen Medical Center, Grove Hill Memorial Hospital, DW McMillian Hospital in Brewton, and Atmore Community Hospital. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) performed the random survey from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. The other four categories that MCH ranked near the top are: • Patients who reported that the staff “Always” explained about medicines before giving it to them, • Patients who reported that the area around the room was “Always” quite at night, • Patients at each hospital who reported that Yes, they were given information about what to do during their recovery at home, • Patients who reported Yes, they would definitely recommend the hospital.
