Moody Permanent Endowment Fund, Galveston ISD Educational Foundation award massive grant to GISD schools The grant, amounting to almost $240,000, will go towards the Balanced Literacy program at middle schools, as well as Internet accessibility, iPads for Austin Middle School GALVESTON, Texas – The Moody Permanent Endowment Fund recently awarded the Galveston ISD Educational Foundation (GEF) its largest single award in its 12-year history, giving nearly $240,000 in funding that will provide GISD schools with a variety of materials and equipment geared to help improve learning. This is the first project since 2007 that will be in align with specific district goals for the upcoming school year with those of the GEF. Since its inception in 2001, the GEF has given over $2.5 million to schools and teachers in the form of grants and classroom support. “Without the GEF, the district wouldn’t be able to carry out many of the initiatives we have in order to support creative and innovative education,” said Larry Nichols, Superintendent of Schools. “The support they’ve given us over the last decade has been unparalleled and the recent grant awarded to the GEF through the Moody Permanent Endowment Fund will carry us forward into the new school year. This will help achieve some of those common goals the district and foundation have together.” A portion of the grant will go towards the Balanced Literacy program at Central Middle School ($116,049) and AIM College and Career Preparatory ($7,864). Balanced Literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively. This balance between reading and writing allows students to receive the individualized teaching appropriate to their strengths and needs in literacy. A second portion of the grant will go to the wiring of Austin Middle School and the purchase of iPads for $113,596. This will make all GISD schools up to speed with wireless technology, allowing teachers to utilize the latest in iPad educational applications to engage students on their level. This has even further ranging importance with the popular, nationally recognized Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Magnet being located at the Austin campus. The GEF has been an active supporter of innovative education in GISD for over a decade. The foundation provides funding for sustainable educational projects to schools and teachers that wouldn’t otherwise be funded by the school district general budget. Executive Director Eliza Quigley has worked extensively in her first 2 years to bring in donations that would go together with district and GEF goals. “We are thankful for the vision of the GEF,” said Dr. Matthew Hay, GISD Board President. “We believe that working together will make a better GISD for everyone, and especially for our children. I look forward to many more years of working with our foundation and assisting any way possible with its growth to accommodate all wonderful learning solutions of our staff and teachers.” ### For interview requests, please contact: Johnston Farrow District Communications Specialist Galveston Independent School District (409)766-5145 (work) (409)692-3894 (cell) [email protected]
