More Media Snippets:- Lake Macquarie City Council advises that in accordance with Roads Act 1993 Section 162, Roads (General) Regulations 2008 proposes to name the following roads that have been pre-approved by the Geographical Names Board: Location/Description Proposed road names in the subdivision at Catherine Hill Bay. This is a revised list due to objections received in May. Proposed Road Name - Origin of name Hopwood Close, Quinn Street, Wardle Avenue, Farr Street - deceased war veterans from Catherine Hill Bay who served in the First World War. ......................................................................................................... What Hunter Valley Military History has to say:- What a wonderful initiative on the part of Lake Macquarie City Council in naming four streets at Catherine Hill Bay in honour of four Diggers who paid the supreme sacrifice in The Great War of 1914-1918. From the Hunter Valley Diggers of World War One data base the following basic service details for each of these men is as follows:- Hopwood Close – Private George Hopwood, a 19 years old single mine wheeler of Mine Camp, Catherine Hill Bay when he enlisted on 30 November 1915. Killed in action 1 September 1918 at Mont St Quentin and buried in Peronne Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Quinn Street – Unknown. *The Catherine Hill Bay Honour Roll of Soldiers, Honour Roll and the Catherine Hill Bay War Memorial, dedicated on 25 February 2006 (and more than likely listing names from the local Honour Rolls) has the name “J Quinn” listed and marked as killed in action during the war. There were two Quinns from the Hunter Valley who died in The Great War:- Private Clive William Quinn of ‘Springfield,’ Parkville, Scone, 34th Infantry Battalion, killed in action at Messines on 9 June 1917 and Corporal Michael John Quinn of Pages Creek, Ellerston, also of the 34th Infantry Battalion and died of wounds on 18 October 1917. From our research the only ‘J Quinn’ living in the Hunter Valley at time of enlistment was Private Joseph James Quinn, a 24 years old single shop assistant of Owens Gap via Scone when he enlisted on 22 August 1915 and embarked for return to Australia on 1 November 1917. The Australian War Memorials’ “Roll of Honour” lists thirteen (13) “J Quinn”s as dying in The Great War, being Jack Quinn, 5658 18th Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 James Quinn, 4840 32nd Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 James Quinn, 1797 5th Australian Light Horse Regiment First World War, 1914-1918 James Laurence Quinn, 3269 59th Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 James Martin Quinn, 2894 3rd Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 James Patrick Quinn, 971 18th Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 John Quinn, 247 Tunnelling Company Corps First World War, 1914-1918 John Francis Quinn, 2355 22nd Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 John Joseph Quinn, 637 33rd Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 John Michael Quinn, 4578 51st Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 John Patrick Quinn, 2631 33rd Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 John William Quinn, 201 2nd Australian Light Horse Regiment First World War, 1914-1918 Joseph Quinn, 2791 52nd Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 Joseph Patrick Quinn, 5429A 14th Australian Infantry Battalion First World War, 1914-1918 however none of these men’s details mentions “Catherine Hill Bay.” There were twelve other men from Catherine Hill Bay who paid the supreme sacrifice during The Great War. If Lake Macquarie City Council require another name then one of the following may be suitable, our preference being “McDougall” the reason being five of them enlisted from Catherine Hill Bay. Were they all brothers?:- Pte Arthur Edward Baker - Gallipoli Pte William Thomas Gill - Belgium Pte Edward Francis Jackson - France Sgt-Maj Frank Mathers - England Pte Joseph McDougall (one of five McDougalls - brothers? – from Catherine Hill Bay that enlisted) - Belgium Pte Andrew ONeil - France Pte Percy James Penfold - France Pte William Symington - Belgium Pte Albert Ernest Ward - France Pte Aage Almer Westergaard - France Pte William Harold Whitehead - Malta Pte Thomas George Woods - Egypt Wardle Avenue – Private Joseph Wardle a 21 years old single miner from Catherine Hill Bay when he enlisted on 6 January 1916. Died of wounds on 7 June 1917 and buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Farr Street – Private Victor Emanuel Farr, a 20 years old single miner of Middle Camp, Catherine Hill Bay when he enlisted on 29 August 1914. Killed in action at Gallipoli between 25 and 29 April 1915. No known grave. Name on Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli. May They Rest In Eternal Peace.
