In the wake of craze for diploma in education , ded, the old and competent course Bachelor of Education , B Ed, is being overlooked by the students as a result there wereno takers for thepopular Bed course. Last year as against 2.25 lakh applicants for BEd, this academic year there is no such rush for the course asso far only a lakh applications have been received for Bed entrance test, according to authorities , who have expressed their disappointment. The rationale behind this is that the National Council of Teachers’ Education (NCTE) specified in their ruling that 2-year DEd candidates, with a pass in Intermediate, were eligible for teaching from class one to class eight in the elementary schools. The NCTE also opined that the DEd candidates, who were trained in child psychology, were quite eligible to teach inthe elementary schools, whichalso had the sanction of the Supreme Court . The candidates with one-year B Ed, after graduation, were trained to teach only in subjects chosen by themlike science , maths , etc, unlike their D Ed counterparts , who were specifically trained in child psychology were more capable of handling the primary and middle school students. This was the yardstick employed by the NCTE and as well endorsed by theRTE 2009, which madeclear that D Edcandidates were better positioned to teach the children considering their grasping power at a tender age. Same rule was specified in the DSC -2012 notification, which drove nearly six lakh B Ed candidates to the wall. This is the sad story of oncepopular graduates with B Ed qualifications since 1950s.
