More Power to You By: Pastor Calvin C. Hays January 1, 2015 It is a certainty that our need of more and greater power enlarges with the birthing of a new year. This is said against the reality of the laws of cause and effect. They exist as sure as the rising of the sun. And these laws will meet us at every turn of the clock on the wall. One need not be a prophet or the son of a prophet to see that trends and patterns are in place which further isolate individuals and anchor them to the devices in which they are utterly lost. And, the trend of anger and hatred by and between groups and races of people not to mention the horrible religious antagonisms that breed terrorism, all conspire to separate and divide. Withal, there is the now deeply entrenched notions that even the most sacred relationships of husbands and wives, parents and children, are simply temporary. Those who have been chosen at all levels of government are launching into deeply troubled waters. Like salmon, every inch they take will be uphill, against the current, against contrary winds and forces, against the sinister and destructive powers of widely accepted but hugely dangerous values. That is why the New Year is a heart cry for much greater power. Where shall we turn for a new and superseding power? Perhaps we remember that David (even David) fell upon a moment of utter inadequacy. Neither he nor his army could simply make his will happen. What then? “I will sing of Thy Power; yeah, I will sing aloud of Thy mercy in the morning: for Thou hast been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble (59:16) Again, the Psalmist says: “God has spoken once; twice have I heard this: that POWER belongs unto God.” (62:11) And surely we all recall the stunning post-resurrection word of Jesus: “All-power is given unto me in heaven and on earth…” Many of us have verified and certified this statement of Jesus. Certainly it springs of faith, but not faith cut loose from experience. To think that there is power enough even in our best leaders to correct the failing course of our society is utter folly. Rather such leaders and all who follow must draw down from the wisdom and omnipotence of Almighty God the power to find new ways to greater values, higher standards and more noble character for all of us. Let us pray for our new leaders!
