More Ready and Adequate Support to the Young !! Last Friday night I went to he Cattle Depot Artist Village to attend the dance performance 《原居地》. Yesterday afternoon I went to Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre to attend the performance 《青春還盛夏了什麼》. Both are creations by young people with very limited budgets and hardly enough resource support. But their involvement and creation are much of great passion and hard work that we should treasure and pay attention to. I like the dancers for their youthful energy, technical finesse, innovative movement/choreography and engagement in dancing in 《原居地》, but not its narrative and its quite incomplete choreography at the ending that is too loose as compared to the compactness in the early part. The video projection does not do too much justice to the performance but the music does help the performance a lot. The production team, though young, is competent enough to push things through for the creative. As for 盛夏, there are shadows of Zunis previous performance of 100 Years of Solitude for the beginning (the caravan) and the end (the hero memorial stone) and Zunis movement language. However, the contents in the body part are mainly creations by the 100 participating performers that are contemporary and much their own experience. The participating youth are serious enough to carry the experimental performance through with enough seriousness and composure. Of course, their desire to perform in excess sometimes overwhelms the artistic control. However, the seriousness is fortunately kept in check by a young man who always sits aside on the stage and says at intervals something obviously didactic. There is structure and rhythm in the performance. The obvious and the abstract intermingles in a satisfactory manner thus sustaining audiences interest and imagination. All non-financial possibilities are explored (including the curtain wall at the back the stage) to enhance the aesthetics of the performance.
