More and more Im understanding that liberal and conservative are meaningless phrases. At one time they gave a rough idea about where someone sits on the political spectrum, but not anymore. I dont know anybody who is completely liberal or conservative. Most of us display a mix of the two in various proportions. Today, the only real use the terms have is as a cudgel to beat somebody up with, because if somebody is liberal or conservative you already know whether you like them or not. In my district we have an uneasy alliance between the ultra conservatives of the libertarian stripe and the ultra liberal old hippie ethic. They both want the same things: less government, less laws, the right to grow pot (ironic to say the least), cheap water from LOCAL SOURCES: why should Northern California rice farmers have to pay premium prices for local water. We NEED them to have cheap water so we can EAT RICE. More and more the fringes are agreeing with each other. I live for the day when labels will not define complex relationships of fact, policy, right and wrong.
