More bicycle tourism. I spent the weekend visiting my son and daughter. They both live in the Rochester, NY area. I headed up a bit early to explore the trail along the Genesee River. The trail was a mixed bag, some portions were very nice other areas badly in need of maintenance. The trail zig-zaged back and forth across the river. This made it hard to follow. There were many signs along the trail but few where they were most needed such as intersections and turns. I asked several locals for directions with poor results. I asked an older couple riding on the trail. They talked about not being able to use bridges indicated on the map and other bridges not shown on the map. They changed their mind several times and were generally unsure of the trail past their usual short loop. I also quizzed a policeman who was similarly unsure. I finally found a visitor center along the route. The person working the desk was telling me about the trail. I indicated some of the previous directions I received sent me to steps. His response was Oh--I have never actually used the trail. I spent more time way finding on Google maps than riding. The river reminded me of the Susquehanna River about 20 yrs ago. There are several waterfalls but several designated lookout areas were overgrown with brush and did not allow a view of the river! The Genesee is one of the few rivers that flows south to north. Overall I was disappointed. The trail along the Erie Canal is much nicer and easier to follow, I did that one last year.
