More blood is needed from black and mixed-race donors now. The black and black mixed-race demographic makes up 4.6% of the population in England, but only 1.1% of active blood donors. As there is a much higher prevalence of rare blood types amongst those with black heritage, and because some patients have a much better chance of survival when they are given blood from a similar ethnic background, securing the commitment of us black blood donors is of the utmost importance.
