More charred items. Except for our bedroom, which we are still going to investigate because there HAS to be a sign of the money somewhere. Carl and I each found a Haitian gourde bill, each separate, but both had been in/on the cabinet where it started. They are in perfect condition so we hope... When we think positive thoughts, we say things are looking up... In our case when we look up we see charred beams, blue tarp covering the holes in the roof and through it the blue sky or, yesterday, snow. We can see half of a beautiful chest Mieke received for her 16th birthday, broken tiles from the new bathroom upstairs. Half of childrens books and melted records. Then funny things: found three violins in their cases, including a 1/4 size newish one. The cases are shriveled. The violins in perfect condition except the little one that has some edges damaged. Yesterday I went in. Again. I keep going back into the now stripped downstairs, hoping to see something I didnt see before. I close my eyes and see the pictures on the wall, the comfy papasan in the corner. Sander and Kristinas tea kettle on the stove and all my junk on the desk in the dining room. Carl, fortunately, lost very little of his clothing. I lost everything except what was in my carry-on. Its ok. I realize now how little I need to survive and be happy. Walking around the hollow-sounding house I find only perfectly empty rooms, except our bedroom and the spice drawer in the kitchen. Eerie, because it reminds me of moving in 31 years ago. The excitement was different... So today, with the help of the contractor (a great and compassionate guy) we will search through a foot of frozen blackness to find the last things back, especially the money for Sumitras surgery. (Cant help but focus on that) Have hopes for her. May the soot NOT be with me! Love to all.
