More comments from Congressman Wittman: There is no immediate savings accrued through BRAC. It is years into the future before any savings is realized. The Pentagon talks about acceptable risks. The death of a service member is not an acceptable risk. When the military does not have well maintained and operational equipment along with proper training that means increased risk, which equates to more deaths. The month long August recess of Congress is an artifact of the past. There is no longer a need to take off the entire month. When this was first implemented air conditioning did not exist in D.C. and the preferred mode of transportation was the horse and buggy. Today we have airplanes and D.C. does have air conditioning. If matters are not settled by September 30th and Congress simply passing a continuing resolution for defense into the next year this might lead to a RIF (reduction in force) and potentially extend furloughs into 2014. This is not a solution. Why are we allowing the Chinese to get involved in our policy making? The purchase of Smithfield by the Chinese does raise concerns. The Chinese are always looking long term while we here in the United States only look short term. While we are only looking weeks or months into the future, the Chinese are looking 50 years into the future. Our strategy needs to look long term. For if we do not have the proper response today, we will be asking ourselves 10-20-30 years from now, “How did that happen?” Cyber Battlefield—We should never hesitate to respond just as we would respond when someone fires against us. If a bully kicks you in the shin, you should punch them in the nose.
