More details on the new leisure centre: A long-awaited multi-purpose leisure centre is to be built in Lethbridge by 2019. City Council voted today to expand the scope of an approved major aquatic centre project to include all components of a multi-purpose leisure centre adjoining the Crossings Ice Complex in West Lethbridge. In addition to a new aquatic centre featuring water slides, whirlpools and a lazy river, the project will now comprise other amenities, as well, such as an expanded fitness centre; indoor field area, running track and gymnasium facilities; an indoor playground and child-minding area; multi-purpose rooms; and commercial lease spaces. Council members voted 8-0 in favour of a resolution by Councillor Rob Miyashiro, Chairperson of the Leisure Aquatic Centre Steering Committee, to amend the 2014-2023 Capital Improvement Program to design and build a complete multi-purpose leisure centre for $109.55 million instead of only the previously-approved aquatic centre component at a cost of $54.75 million. A search is to begin immediately for a firm to handle detailed design of the Leisure Centre project. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2015. Funding for the leisure centre project includes the original $54.75 million already allocated for the aquatic centre plus $51.3 million in new borrowing capacity and $3.5 million from the Alberta Community Partnership grant.
