More food for thought: Dont get me wrong. I do understand the appeal of religion. Its far easier to privately and confidentially confess your wrongdoings to a third party who offers almost instant redemption for those wrongdoings, than it is to carry the burden of your wrongdoings and try to make actual amends with those youve done wrong. Its far more comforting to believe that the dead have not simply ceased to exist - that they are somewhere and will be made available to you again at some point in the future, than it is to realize that there is a finite amount of time for interaction with friends, family, and loved ones and that time must be used wisely or will be lost forever. Its far more comforting to believe that I will never end - that I will go on forever and ever, than it is to realize that I, like all other living things, will someday end. Its far easier to pray to a third-party to do something for someone else - to provide help -It gives you the sense of doing something and unburdens you from the guilt of doing nothing, without ever having to do more than talk to a third-party privately. That is far easier than it is to actually do something for someone else - to provide the help they actually need or bearing the burden of knowing that you could have done something but instead did nothing. Its far easier to believe that something or someone else tempts you or convinces you to do wrong, than it is to take personal responsibility for wrong-doing - to own that it was really you. It is far more comforting to believe that you are among a chosen people - marked for special treatment and reward - part of the club, than it is to realize that you are just like everyone else - human and that your life rewards must be earned not bestowed by membership. Yes, I do understand the appeal of religion, and some tell me Ive chosen the easy route in ignoring their god and being openly atheist. I contend that my route is far harder and my personal responsibility is far greater. What do you think?
