He grabbed a pen form the desk, started making writing motions in the air. “Detective Finney thinks Detective Fellontari might be right.” “Screw you.” He kept writing. “Detective Finney gets romantic.” I grabbed the evidence box and made for the door. His voice trailed after me. “Detective Finney comes and goes.” My phone buzzed while I was downstairs. A 7-11 was robbed. Fellontari was in the car when I went outside. I waited for another air message but he just hit the gas and tore out of the lot. I held my breath and hunched my shoulders, waiting for the long overdue crash. “What the hell?” Gene looked at me. “Watch the road.” “It ain’t going anywhere. You gotta have more faith in me, Dan.” “I gotta get more life insurance.” “Ha!” He spun the wheel and drifted around a corner, much to the surprise of several people stepping off the curb. With the windows up I couldn’t hear the cussing, but the looks on their faces and the upraised middle fingers gave me an idea of what they said. “Jesus, Gene, slow down.” “And let the bad guys get away?” “The bad guys already got away.” “Then I should drive faster to catch ‘em,” he quipped as he stepped on the gas. “Dear God!” We didn’t catch the bad guys then, but we got good descriptions from the convenience store clerk and a video that captured the two thieves in all their grainy glory. I recognized Tommy Janesworth. Fellontari and I nailed him for a burglary in 2001. Apparently he’d upgraded his ambitions during his eighteen month stay in prison. Neither Tommy nor his partner, a young black guy with a shaved head, displayed a weapon, but the clerk said they told him they had a gun. We drove over to Tommy’s house and found him and his friend in the garage, splitting the take. They didn’t have a gun. Sometimes it’s just too easy.
