More great advice from Jeanette Brunelle Deutermann of Long Island Opt Out: Parents - say NO to ELA/math test prep classes! Its the time of year when districts will start offering assessment test prep, in the form of lunch time sessions, or before/after school sessions. Make no mistake...although districts will say these classes are for extra assistance with reading comprehension and math skills, they are designed to help your child achieve a better score on assessment tests. If your child truly needs extra assistance with reading and/or math, they should be receiving Academic Intervention Services (AIS). If your school recommends these test prep sessions, and youre not sure if you should say no, then ASK your childs TEACHER why your child was recommended, and if it is because they are currently struggling in class, then you should ask for AIS, NOT extra test prep. If your child receives special ed services, then that should be sufficient! Say NO to test prep!
