More great vintage footage of Weeki Wachee! Apparently the roadside attraction had algae issues in 1963, to the degree that Hollywood built an episode of Route 66 around it. Well, sort of. Martin Milner is the algae-removal boy and gorgeous Diane Baker is a real mermaid, so its not just the relationship between the spring and algae thats complicated. Incredibly (for American TV), the mermaid keeps noticing how humans like dead things. Milner never gets it. This episode is amazingly insightful, dare I say prophetic, regarding the algae and the degradation of the springs, cloaked as entertainment. At the same time, its wonderfully entertaining.
