More houses need to be built Tim Montgomerie writes in the Times that Britain needs to build about 250,000 houses a year if prices are to stabilise. Currently only half that number are being built and a leaked Whitehall paper suggests that the number may be declining. Mr Montgomerie says that a huge amount of Britain is still undeveloped and the countryside can cope with a “bit more housing”. Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, writing in the Yorkshire Post, echoes his comments and says that 250,000 new homes need to be built every year, probably for the next 20 to 30 years, if the housing crisis is to be properly addressed. He argues that an all-party agreement is needed to deal with the issue. He adds that a different range of measures are needed to provide a range of different homes including constructing houses for social rent. thetimes.co.uk/tto/opinion/thunderer/article4152850.ece
