More innocent times. When I was a kid back in the forties/early fifties in Tyler TX, there was a (I think) Kress store, with its White and Colored water fountains, kind of spread around the SE corner of College and Erwin on the square, opened out on both streets. The checkout people put your money in a canister in a vacuum tube and somebody in the back office actually made change. But in the very corner, separate from the Kress store, was a little shoe store. And right in the front of this shoe store was a wonderful machine we could amuse ourselves with and nobody minded how long we played with it. You could step up and slip your feet inside it, and look through a scope from above, and watch the bones in your feet wiggle. It was great. So if youre wondering why the generation that grew up in those days turned out to be so rowdy and different in the sixties, well maybe heres your reason. LOTS of X-rays coursing through us.
