More juicy history about the #NYPD -Serpico, (Francesco Vincent) Frank (b Brooklyn, 14 April 1936). New York City police officer. He was the most feared, hated, and controversial policeman in New York City in the late 1960s. Working as a plainclothes detective, he went public about police corruption, revealing bribery and kickbacks that eventually led to the formation in 1970 of the Knapp Commission, which investigated and exposed the corruption. Serpico became the first police officer in history to testify openly about systemic police corruption and payoffs and received numerous death threats after testifying. A year after appearing before the commission, Serpico was shot in the face during a raid on a suspected drug deal in Brooklyn. The bullet entered his cheek and lodged at the top of his jaw. Fellow officers did not come to his aid, nor did they call headquarters to report that an officer had been shot. One month after receiving the New York City Police Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Honor, he retired in 1972.
