More mixing today + test mastering. How different is the digital world! We now have mastering tools to replicate the warmth of analogue (which was actually pleasant distortion). Most musicians knew all along that we had lost something in return for the (apparently) endless possibilities which digital recording offered.Too perfect, clinical, lacking in warmth were some of the nicer comments. Guys like Niel Young were more ascerbic! So the point of test mastering is to get an idea what little fixes might be needed in the mix, in order to do each song justice. It is sad that few realise how much work is entailed, still fewer are prepared to buy a CD ( the best medium to listen on)+ others do not even want to pay to download a track or two, preferring to seek ways to grab songs free, or download an entire album for 99 cents. Money was not my motivation when I began+ these days I do it out of love, believing songwriting matters. I seek beauty. I follow dreams. As for being so intese + driven, since money cannot be a motive, I would hope that I am proud+noble, like a Samurai, but it is more likely I am selfish + obstinate. Please BUY it, some of you, when it comes out. Meanwhile I live on the fantastic entheusiasm of Steff, my co-producer. When he says Brian... this is GREAT! I almost believe him before the Quality Police in my head chip in. I thank God for the love in my home life. I have more than I ever deserved.
