More on Sunny. I got him to run for School Board because we needed an opponent against my old friend Carlos Pasina in about 1990 that was siding with Administration and was supported by the Mex Tex Six Pac Hispanic Republican political group controlled by the White Republican Party who wanted to control La Raza vote ( a Note.. I did support Carlos for City Council later). The Mex Tex 6 Pac (there were six members) wanted to control the 5 elected positions in South Waco as per the Republicans requests. We saw that and decided to run barrio people and Sunny ran and won. They tried to get Sunny off because he did not go before them and get their blessing. These are same Hispanic Republicans that supported Alice Flores Rodriguez against Manuel Sustiata for City Council in 1990 before she had a break off with them over the accounting books at The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce run by her Husband Joe Rodriguez and funded through City of Waco Tax money, ( I did support Alice for 20 yrs) . These Republicans ran someone against Sunny each year and always won because he was for the people and the community knew it. Sunny also ran for Constable and won in about 1992. Sonny was always seen in the community. He even offered rides to people who drinking at bars and seemed too drunk to drive. Sunny worked with the WISD police on truancy which still the main problem in Waco. He would visit the parents and talk w the kids and got them back into school. I asked the WISD police how well they were working w Constable Freddie Cantu and they said WHO? Sunny also had a love hate relationship w the Waco police. At first all hated Sunny and I believe it was the people that supported Alice for City Council the Mex T x 6 PAC because they saw a Free Spirit who was not their puppet. Calls by us were to city hall as to why they refused to work with our elected official, Sunny. After that some things did change. Even at the Office of the Democrat District Attorney s Office John Segrest, Sunny said that some people in the DA offices had called him a Pinkerton Cop. With the Sheriff Jack Harwell he was threaten with his life. Sunny tried to file a complaint with Segrest who refused it. Calls were made to people of power and they were told that the South side would protect Sunny. Harwell backed off. During Sunnys tenure the harassment during stops by the Waco PD slowed because Sunny could show up and be there to assist and could not be arrested for being there. He used his police power to help his community I wish that our Constable Freddie Cantu would do as good a job as Sunny but his priority is play golf and not helping the community.
