More on West Texas: West Texas is like an old girl who isnt much for looks, but can cook and take care of her man. Outsiders wonder how one could love such a place, mostly flat, with ugly, tough old mesquite trees, full of rattlesnakes, scorching heat, wind blowing most of the time, etc. but when the sun goes down and things cool off and you see those streaks of red, yellow, purple and pink across the big sky, you begin to fall in love with the place. In the Fall, my fave time of the year, you see subtle changes in the landscape. No New England type colors, that is true, but up on the Llano Escatado, like when you cross the mostly dry Sand fork of the Brazos, you can imagine that Quanah Parker is close bye, trying to outsmart and outfank Ranald McKenzie.
